WP Spam Shield, Jetpack & Social Conflict

Posted on Wednesday, July 9th, 2014 at 15:20

I have to say a quick thank you to Scott Allen, who wrote the excellent WP-SpamShield for WordPress. I had a problem in that people could not comment. He very quickly helped me identify the problem and get the comments working again (at least unless you are a spammer, in which case good luck!).

Basically the conflict seemed to be that I had the Social Plugin redrawing my Jetpack Comments that was throwing all sorts of problems with the Spamshield.

Scott quickly tracked the problem to Jetpack, but I was independently cycling active plugins on and off to identify the conflict the old fashioned way. I turned off Social and suddenly everything worked.

It turns out you don’t even need to deactivate Social but just the Comment redrawing that they do. So there you go. If you need a Spamfree WordPress run Spamshield, it will work with Jetpack, but not with Social Comments ticked. So untick that Social option and Robert is once again your father’s brother.

Right, now I can get back to my writing…

  1. It’s a shame anti spam software is needed in the first place. ..hope it’s all working now!

It is, I was getting between 7 and 12 spam comments a day, and they were very sophisticated bots too, they would find related posts and include links to them as well as the link to their handbag site or fake shoe store. In some ways they actually made more intelligent comments than many redditors 🙂
Very glad its working though, in that hour it was turned off I had six spam signups…

Really, my small problem aside I recommend WP-SpamShield to anyone who is running WordPress.

    Hey CJ!

Glad everything is working again. I’m glad I could help. 🙂 I’ll do some testing with the social plugin and see if I can get them to play nice.

Let me know if you ever need help again. Hope you have a good week my friend.
